ENTERTAINMENT: Review: James Cameron's Avatar - Attack on America
It is hard to ignore the stunning graphics and the mind blowing effects throughout the movie. There is no doubt that Avatar is by far the most bleeding edge move ever created. Considering this film cost upwards of $500 million to create and market, it isn't overly surprising either.
But, everyone is hailing this movie so I see no reason to propagate its praise any further. Instead, I would like to take a minute to analyze its plot. While the plot isn't nearly as amazing as the effects, and the sequel is obviously in the making considering the movies ending, it is truly astonishing that not too many people are citing the blaring similarities between the Earth People of Avatar and the USA of ... well, earth.
This movie draws on such a parallel between America's colonialism, or rather blatant disregard for any nation outside the USA, that it is shocking so few are commenting about this online. James Cameron virtually created the Earth People of Avatar in America's own image. There is virtually no difference between what the earth people were doing with what America IS doing. Is this Cameron's way of trying to change the perspective of Americans?
When I was watching the movie, I was absolutely stunned by the rich graphics and the amazing 3D effects. Not knowing much about the story before hand, the movie was a complete surprise to me on many levels. As the plot progressed, and it was apparent what the people of earth were up to, I instantly began thinking of how America has done the exact same to so many South American nations. The parallels between the USA and Iraq are equally valid (aside from the lies propagated before the war). Those watching the film are sure to label the people of Earth as terrorists, but will those same people label America as terrorists when drawing on the parallels?
Kudos to James Cameron for having the balls to create such a film, and kudos to the production companies for allowing it to hit the theaters. I only wish that more people will draw on these parallels and make it known throughout the USA. Maybe if enough people see what the USA is doing to the world through James Cameron's eyes, the world may finally be a more peaceful place.

I just watched that movie. It's remind me... what Europeans doing on earth for the passed 500 years - they just take from others. And look what is going on today - terrorizm the best reason to go and kill "others" just like in that movie, ha!!

The movie is definitely about how humans have mercilessly cleaned out greenery and accompanying wild life for their own profit. At one point, the earth was all green, but now due to spreading urbanization, the greenery is shrinking. Soon, we will have animals in zoos and greenery in pictures!

There is another parallel that hasn't been mentioned on this blog. I just watched the movie for the first time today, so pardon me for being late. :) But, I wanted to point out James Cameron's scene when the tree where Naytiri and Jake prayed was being destroyed by the "sky people" or the "Americans." That tree was sacred because there they could pray to Eywa. With disregard, the "Sky people" bulldozed the site. The same is true of how the American government is beginning to take away prayer in school and other public places.

Cassie, I have to disagree with you. I can't draw that same parallel. We can not simply allow a specific religious point of view into classrooms without giving equal weight to a various other religious points of view. There are dozens of well respected religions, at least 10 of which can be considered the most popular (followings of 10 million or more).
Personally, I would love to see a more generalized religion class where they did a sampling of various international religions. This would be beneficial on a number of levels. The majority of religions believe in Creationism of some kind, which may aid its teachings in High School. However, I find a class geared towards a single religioun offensive, it provides a jaded point of view.

Whoever posted this I feel is an accurate in identification of the parellel. I justed watched it and it is quite glaring.I think that it also may described what the Mayans and Hopi Indians describe as happening in the 2012 transition. Well Done!

I think Avatar is one of the best movie I have ever seen in my life. Cameron has done a great job, good direction by him. The story was simple but the special effect were incredible. Zoe and Sam were fantastic in the movie.
