Remember the time when someone told you that too much sex can turn you blind and you laughed at it? Well it seems that it is true!
Cases reported –
- A 66-year old man turned blind in one eye after having an orgasm. Every Time he has sex, he loses eyesight in one his eyes for a brief period of time.
- In 2008, a doctor in Texas reported the similar symptoms in a 48-year-old woman. Thirty minutes after sex, she’d get a headache and go blind in one eye.
The first incidence was reported in a paper called “Transient monocular blindness precipitated by sexual intercourse” by Peter Kristian Kofoed, Dan Milea and Michael Larsen. Check the abstract –
A 66-year old man complained of recurrent transient monocular visual loss in his left eye during the climax of sexual intercourse. A complete carotid stenosis was found on the contralateral side and 50% on the ipsilateral side. Treatment with enalapril, antithrombotics and statin resulted in complete resolution of the visual symptoms. Source: bjo.bmj.com
Also, from the Discovery Blog –
“The physiological response to sexual activity includes an increase in sympathetic nervous system activity, heart rate and systolic blood pressure. Our patient experienced transient monocular visual loss every time he reached the climax of sexual intercourse, but never while performing strenuous physical exercise. Hypothetical mechanisms of transient monocular visual loss in our patient include vasoconstriction or embolism in the arterial blood supply of the eye. The repeated and completely transient nature of our patient’s symptoms supports the fact that embolism was not involved, whereas the resolution of the symptoms after initiation of the treatment with the vasodilator enalapril supports vasoconstriction as the cause of transient blindness.”Source: blogs.discovermagazine.com
