Surfers in South Africa claim to have broken the world record for most surfers boarding the same wave at the Earthwave beach festival in Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa. It is claimed that at least 103 surfers surfed the wave together.

103 surfers break world record of riding the same wave

They needed more than 100 to break the previous world record set at a previous Earthwave festival, in Santos in Brazil.

Organiser Dean Botha said afterwards: "Unofficially, we have just taken the Guinness World Record for the most surfers on a wave. Brazil has got it at the moment at 100 people and we've just done an unofficial count on the fourth wave at 125 people so unofficially we've taken it back."Source: itn.co.uk

Paul Botha of Kahuna Promotions, the founders of the event, told globalsurfnews.com: “We estimated that there were more than 120 surfers on the fifth of the seven waves surfed at Muizenberg during Earthwave.

“However, the photographic evidence we have so far shows that there were 103 on the same wave, which is enough to overtake the record.

“We are still waiting for more images and video footage that we will submit to the Guinness World Record organisation in London to have the record ratified.”

The record attempt was blessed with ideal conditions of sunshine, light breeze and moderate waves, as 443 surfers joined forces to make the record.

It seems like South Africa has got the record back. Congratulations, but maybe next Earthwave beach festival , you all can break it yet again!
