TECH: "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" breaks records: 550 million in 5 days

World --

Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" seems to have broken all records. It has not only broken video game launch records but also entertainment launches records.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beats all records

With $550 million in 5 days, the launch has beaten largest worldwide box-office opening, held by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which tallied $394 million over its first five days. It also beat "The Dark Knight," which holds the U.S. box-office record with $203.8 million in first five-day sales.

The game, a "first-person-shooter" that lets gamers portray elite soldiers hunting down targets in locations ranging from South America to Afghanistan, beat last year's blockbuster "Grand Theft Auto IV" from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc which sold more than $500 million in its first week.

Activision did not say how many units were sold in the period. Last week it said it sold 4.7 million copies for sales of $310 million on its first day in the U.S. and United Kingdom alone.

Analysts' sales estimates for the $60 game range from 11 million to 13 million units by the end of 2009. There is plenty at stake for Activision since "Call of Duty" is likely to account for a sizable chunk of the company's profits in the fourth quarter, analysts say.

"Despite the success of 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2', Activision Blizzard remains cautious about the U.S. and global economy as well as other variables that can affect industry fundamentals and our own performance, including consumer spending which remains a significant concern," he said in a statement.

I played the game a little bit over the weekend, and to tell you the truth, it is just amazing! Just a word of caution - it has a lot of violence involved (as expected) and the whole "No Russian" chapter is way too controversial to shake your moral element.

Buy it if you like first person shooters and amazing graphics and are OK (and old enough) with violence

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" is the best game according to me, and there is no miracle if it broke all the records.

I'm with Jim on thinking that it's just trying to bring even more controversy and media attention on the game. I might be willing to give IW some more credit on that, if it weren't for stuff like F.A.G.S. and (as the Joystiq podcast mentioned), having prominent weed references in the game as jokes. I think it's very hard to claim the moral high ground regarding your content, when you're also trying to satisfy the absolute lowest common denominator.
