A Lousiana woman threatened to jump off the Hathway Bridge (125 feet into St. Andrew’s Bay) but was pulled back to safety after brilliant work by the local cops.

“She had a bottle of vodka with her,” said Eddie Reynolds, a fisherman at the scene. “She told us she was going to go up on the bridge and try to kill herself. We tried to talk her out of it.”

Fisherman “Shorty” Stevens said he was sitting with the woman on a  bench near the bridge as she drank a pint of vodka with orange juice.

“Something was bothering her real bad,” Stevens said, adding that woman told him her name was Tootsie and she was from Louisiana.

“She said when she finished her vodka she was going to go up on the bridge and jump,” he said.

The woman could be seen and heard yelling at the officers and passing drivers as she clung onto the bridge’s railing. An empty pint of Rita’s vodka and an empty bottle of orange juice were found next to the bench where she had been sitting.

Capt. Steve Harbuck, with Bay County Sheriff’s hostage negotiation team responded to the incident. When Harbuck arrived, he noticed deputies had succeeded in getting the woman’s full attention, said Ruth Corley, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

“When he noticed that, he reached over and grabbed her,” pulling her to safety, Corley said. “He had to make the decision to either talk or end it right there.” (from here)
