China Sex Ed Dolls: Kindergarten class uses dolls to teach sex education

Yaolan kindergarten in the Henan capital of Zhengzhou seems to be teaching sexual education to 4 to 5 year old children in a strange yet innovative manner - using dolls.

A recent typical exchange at the school included a new student asking if babies fell from the sky and then grew in the earth, only for another girl to raise her hand and tell the class the truth: "Daddy's sperm finds mommy's egg, and then a baby grows inside mommy's stomach!"

The teacher, surnamed Hou (?), then asked the class how sperm swims to find the egg, with her students replying by clasping their hands together and moving them in a side-to-side tadpole-like swimming motion. Other facts of life are also explained as part of the class, including the names and functions of male and female genitalia, and the inevitability of pubic hair.

China has one of the highest abortion rates in the world, while while two-thirds of adolescents and young adults in China "had very limited levels of sexual reproductive health knowledge," they were also open to premarital sex.

Young people like Yin are falling through the cracks. A U.N.-funded survey of 22,288 Chinese aged 15-24 by the Peking University Population Research Institute in 2009 found that two-thirds were accepting of premarital sex but that most "had very limited levels of sexual reproductive health knowledge."

The survey found 22 percent had had sex before; of those, more than 50 percent used no contraception during their first sexual encounter. A 2009 survey of American high schoolers by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control found 46 percent of students had had sex and 85 percent used contraceptives during their most recent sexual activity.
