WEIRD: Teenagers Light 15-Year-Old on Fire Over $40

Teen on Fire

Jeremy Jarvis, 13 (L) and his brother Denver Colorado Jarvis, 15, via Miami Herald.

What has the world turned into? A group of five Broward County, FL teenagers lit another 15-year-old on fire, burning 80% of his body. The reason cited was revenge: money owed ($40) for a video game and the thwarted theft of the victim's father's bike.

The victim is Michael Brewer, 15. The accused, all about the same age as Brewer, are Michael Bent, 15; Denver Colorado Jarvis, 15; his brother Jeremy Jarvis, 13; Steven Shelton, 15; and Jesus Mendez, 15.

Brewer owed Bent the money for the video game. The attempted theft of Brewer's father's bicycle was in retaliation, but failed, and both boys were absent from school. Brewer feared retaliation; Bent stayed home after his stint in juvenile detention.

The incident took place at the Lime Street Apartments at 429 SE 13th Ct. where Brewer went to see a friend. All five of the other boys were there as well, and after opportunistically grabbing a bottle of rubbing alcohol that they found along a wall, Bent gave the order: "Pour it on him. Pour it on him."

Denver Jarvis poured the alcohol on Brewer, and Mendez used a lighter to set Brewer on fire. Because of his actions in the incident, Mendez has been charged with second degree attempted murder; all 5 boys are charged with aggravated battery.

What's worse is that Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) spokesperson Sgt. Steve Feeley said that remorse was not generally felt among the 5: "A couple of them last night were laughing about it," he said Tuesday.

A still unanswered question: why do kids resort to this type of behavior? While definitely not common, it's also not rare. Why not simply go to the parents of the person you felt "offended" you?

Wait, is that kids name "Denver Colorado Jarvis"? Denver is his first name and Colorado is his middle name? ... that can't be right. This is bully? How can a kid with a name like that be a bully? That is such an easy target its amazing.

... what I want to know, what were his parents thinking when naming him. Creativity is a bit lacking in the family, huh?

Its too bad there arent laws that would permit the judge to require these boys to submit to mandatory skin and organ donations. If the victim loses an eye, or an ear, each of these boys should be required to give up one of their own. If he loses his life, they should all die. I dont want them in my world.

You hit the nail on the head with that one. You know that most bullies are people who get made fun of the most, and resort to belittling others to feel better about themselves. As for the story, it makes me sick. I think they should receive the worst punishment possible for kids their age. Unbelievable.

Juveniles aged 14-17 can be sentenced as adults. The Common Law splits children into 3 groups. Group 2 is children 7-14, who are presumed to have no criminal capacity, but the presumption can be overcome; they should have the mental capacity to distinguish right from wrong. Group 3 is children 14 and over, who have the same capacity as adults. Generally for Group 2, if the child is closer to 14, and by the Judge's discretion, they can be charged as an adult. There are also guidelines called the Judicial Waiver which they follow to determine how to sentence a child:
(1) The seriousness of the offence. (2) Whether the offense was committed in an aggressive, violent, premeditated, willful manner. (3) Whether the offense was against a person. (4) The amount of evidence against the juvenile. (5) The sophistication and maturity of the juvenile. (6) The prior record of the juvenile. (7) The threat the juvenile poses to public safety.
It was stated that all 5 boys have prior records. From comparing the 7 guidelines to the crime, I'd say the average judge would sentence the 13 year old as an adult - depending on his involvement.
In another article, Denver's attorney (poor lady.. she's probably court appointed) stated that Denver was upset with the way the media was portraying him. Ummm his friend was out $40, so Denver stole a $500 bike, got arrested, and makes matters worse by setting a kid on fire. He shows no remorse and laughs about it when questioned by police, and he's worried about how the media is portraying him?!?!? What a sad, pathetic, sadistic boy! Even his picture looks evil.
I think they should charge both Menendez and Denver Jarvis with attempted 2nd degree murder in addition to the battery charge. And all 5 should have to volunteer at a burn unit while they're awaiting their trial.

I think this is just a horrible story!  What in the world is going on with our kids these days?  My fiance was murdered almost 3 years ago by 3 young men who were barely out of high school...and it was over some BS that my fiance had NOTHING to do with...he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and they shot him....so my question is what the hell is wrong with kids these days???  This story is not the first of its kind in these past few years....more and more kids are becoming more and more out of control daily....and what happens most of the time....they either get a slap on the wrist or nothing at all happens!!  Fortunately the ones who killed my fiance and the father of our children away are being punished...they are in prison....but there are soooo many who are left unpunished and who usually wind up hurting someone else.....I think these boys need to be tried as adults....what will they learn if they only face punishment until they are 18?....when the poor child that they hurt will NEVER be the same....

Since it was 5 boys acting as a gang, each boy could get a much longer sentence as a GANG attack.  This happened to a group of kids who killed another child on a TV show, like American Justice or a similar program.  GANG attacks bring much stiffer consequences.  They would need to be tried as a Gang.
