WORLD: British government OKs Heathrow's third runway
UK, London --
Despite a lot of protests, the British government gave the green light for the third runway at London's Heathrow Airport.
This is good news for some and bad news for rest
Good News
- The runway will allow Heathrow to add additional capacity.
- The threat from other European airports at Paris (Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport has 4 runways) and Amsterdam (Amsterdam's Schipol airport has 5 runways) to take Heathrow's position of the busiest airport and steal traffic will be gone.
- More jobs - The new increase in capacity is supposed to add 65,000 jobs at Heathrow.
Bad News
- People living near the airport will have even more noise pollution
- More flights mean more carbon emissions.
- Opponents say adding more than 200,000 flights a year would torpedo Britain's plan to reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050 and also violate European Union pollution and noise standards
