FEMEN Protest a Shameful Ukraine over Roman Landik Verdict (NSFW)

On July 7th of 2011, Roman Landik senselessly beat Maria Korshunov in a restaurant in Lugansk, Ukraine. The entire incident was recorded on CCTV (video below). While beating a woman isn't too uncommon in Ukraine, generally the man is punished for his crime. However, Roman Landik was a member of the Regions Party in Ukraine, and his father, Volodymyr Landik, is likewise a member of the party, so with his help Roman simply bribed the right people and was set free.

Here is a video of the event that took place. Please note, the video is graphic in nature. Maria Korshunov is beaten severely and spent several days in the neurological department of Luhansk hospital suffering from concussion and bruising.

FEMEN were warned that Roman had already paid all the right people and would be released after his court appearance. Not surprisingly, they sprung into action. They quickly organized a protest with 5 of their members holding up signs like "Landik in Jail", "Castrate the Bitch" and "Long live Lynching". They then stormed the courthouse with reporters closely behind. All the while they chant "Landik in Jail" and "Castrate the Bitch". They slowly make their way up the courthouse, but don't quite get to Landik himself.

Of course, they were arrested and sent off to a local jail. Landik was released shortly afterwards with no jail time or serious penalty.

The corruption of Ukraine is abhorrent. The fact that a man can beat a woman in the middle of a restaurant filled with people, send the woman to the hospital with severe damage, and all the while have the entire incident filmed, then simply pay someone off and walk free is a joke. Western nations need to pay more attention to acts such as this when considering Ukraine for any form of international membership. If they are so open in their corruption, how can the government be trusted?

Below is a video of the protest, shot by Kitty Green. While it is in Russian, there isn't much to understand. For the most part, the ladies are chanting what is written on their signs, which seems reasonably straight forward to catch. Agreed, corruption is a way of life in Ukraine. Friends of mine claim that the ports of Odessa have practically closed down because of the exorbitant bribes demanded for releasing a container. I am told that a single container's minimum charge is $20,000. How can a country like that hope to compete in the global market?

I'm glad at least FEMEN are willing to stand up to the ridiculous corruption plaguing that state. If at least a handful of Ukraine's citizens were willing to speak up, maybe then something could be done. Unfortunately, Ukrainians are apathetic to corruption, some even claiming that it is better this way.
