WORLD: More Labanese Rockets Strike Israel
With more rockets flying over the Lebanon/Israel border, the thought of a new Lebanese/Israeli war is striking fear into the heart of civilians that would be caught up in the conflict. After Lebanese rockets struck Israel, Israel quickly responded with mortar fire.
The AFP spoke with Lebanese residents and quotes one:
"My six-year-old girl was terrified," said Hassan Faqih, 49, as he headed to the nearby coastal town of Tyre with his wife and two children. "We will stay in Tyre if the situation escalates."
Hezbollah denies any involvement in the rockets, but Israel isn't convinced. After the war in 2006, Hezbollah has lost all its credit with Israel. Regarding the rockets themselves, Israeli army spokesman said,
The Israeli army considers this a serious incident and believes it is the responsibility of the Lebanese government and the army to prevent this rocket fire.
This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora denounced the violence from both sides saying,
The Israeli shelling is an unacceptable and unjustified violation of Lebanese sovereignty. The rockets launched from Lebanon threaten the country's security and stability and constitute a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
While the Lebanese Prime Minister has a valid point, Terrorism is something that Israel has developed a reputation with. If the Lebanese want Israel's attacks stopped, it would be in their best interests to root out the problem from within.
