WORLD: Air France Flight 447 vanishes between Brazil and Paris; 228 on board

Brazil --

Air France flight AF447 with 228 on board (216 passengers and 12 crew members) lost contact near Brazil's coast while making the 11 hour journey between Brazil's Rio de Janerio Airport and France's Charles de Gaulle Airport. Brazil's airforce has launched a rescue operation to find the flight from archipelago of Fernando de Noronha in the Atlantic Ocean, 365 km (226 miles).

An official with the French government's transport agency said contact with the plane was lost at 0220 GMT Monday (10:20 p.m. EDT Sunday). The official was not authorized to be named according to agency policy.

Barrand said the airline installed an information center at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for the families of those aboard.

"Air France regrets to announce that it is without news from Air France flight 447 flying from Rio to Paris," she said. "Air France shares the emotion and worry of the families concerned."

The flight lost contact at around 10:30 pm local time after being in flight for around 3.5 hours.

Update - This flight is supposed to have "crossed through a thunderous zone with strong turbulence" And the last message recieved was "signalling electrical circuit malfunction"

French minister Jean-Louis Borloo said the plane had probably had an accident and ruled out hijacking. He said: "By now it would be beyond its kerosene reserves so unfortunately we must now envisage the most tragic scenario."

With French president Nicolas Sarkozy expressing his concern at the incident, Air France spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand said: "We share the emotion and worry of the families concerned."

The airplane is an Airbus A330 and has never been involved in a crash.

I sincerely hope that we find the aircraft and people all fine.

WORLD:  Debris Found

Brazil --

It has been reported that one of the Brazilian rescue planes have found debris like seat cushion, a life jacket, some white pieces of material and signs of fuel 600 miles off Brazil's northeastern coast and about 400 miles northeast of the Brazilian island of Fernando do Noronha, roughly along the plane’s scheduled flight path from Rio de Janiero to Paris. The wreakage is small for the an airplane of that size. So search is still on.

Two Americans On-board

Two Americans were on board, the company said, and CNN identified them as Michael Harris, 60, a geologist living in Brazil, and his wife, Anne Harris. Mr. Harris, originally from Greenville, S.C., worked for Devon Energy in Houston, according to a Greenville TV station. Mrs. Harris, 54, was from Lafayette, La., and the couple had lived in Rio de Janeiro for almost a year.Source: www.nytimes.com

There are a lot of speculations -

- Huge electrical malfunction due to some events

- Bomb? (not sure if this can be an intelligent speculation)

More?

This is extremely unfortunate. While it would be nice to have high hopes for the aircraft, it is highly improbable that it is ok considering the situation reported on its last transmission.

Tragedies happen all the time. It is better not to dwell on them, but learn from the mistakes.

WOW ... that's terrible. I am sure that lightning isn't a friend of airplanes, so entering storm fronts must be a tricky business.

I hope that search teams find a trace of them somewhere.

Normally storms are not that bad, as pilots are trained to find some exit area to get out of the storm and then fly around it. Obviously something went wrong with AF447.

Further, airplanes are designed to withstand strong turbulence, so it seems that there were series of things that went wrong.

Hope they find something SOON!

Reminds me of the first episode of "Lost" and hopefully they landed on some island and are figuring a way to contact the world. I know "wishful" thinking.
