WORLD: Video: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Speech on Peace Process

Jerusalem, Israel --

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed an independent Palestinian state beside Israel for the first time on Sunday, dramatically reversing himself in the face of U.S. pressure but attaching conditions the Palestinians swiftly rejected.

A week after President Barack Obama's address to the Muslim world, Netanyahu said the Palestinian state would have to be unarmed and recognize Israel as the Jewish state _ a condition amounting to Palestinian refugees giving up the goal of returning to Israel.

Netanyahu, in an address seen as his reponse to Obama, refused to heed the U.S. call for an immediate freeze of construction on lands Palestinians claim for their future state. He also said the holy city of Jerusalem must remain under Israeli sovereignty.

Senior Palestinian officials Saeb Erekat said the plan "closed the door" to negotiations.

Still, it was a dramatic transformation for a man raised on a fiercely nationalistic ideology and who has spent a two-decade political career criticizing peace efforts.

"I call on you, our Palestinian neighbors, and to the leadership of the Palestinian Authority: Let us begin peace negotiations immediately, without preconditions," he said, calling on the wider Arab world to work with him.

Since assuming office in March, Netanyahu has been caught between American demands to begin peace talks with the Palestinians and the constraints of a hardline coalition. With his speech, he appeared to favor Israel's all-important relationship with the U.S. at the risk of destabilizing his government.

Netanyahu laid out his vision in a half-hour speech broadcast nationwide during prime time. He spoke at Bar-Ilan University, known as a bastion of the Israeli right-wing establishment, and his call for establishing a Palestinian state was greeted with lukewarm applause.

There's only one legitimate place I've found to watch it, the rest seem like scams :-/ You can see it over here though: http://vostuu.com/watch28015.html

I hope that Netanyahu finally achieves some degree of peace in Israel. As much as I hate the Palestinian terrorists, the Palestinian people aren't to blame for this yet they suffer most. Israeli citizens also suffer greatly, which is why peace is so important in that region.

It is absolutely no surprise, the Arabs right away rejected Netanyahu speech. I think, the
only offer Arabs will accept is if Jews will lie down and dye! It doesn’t matter who,
what, how and when offers to Arabs, they live in their own fantasy world. Their “fantasy
World” sees Jews dead and they wont settle for anything less. Why should they? They
already keeping most of the world as hostage, just take a look on Western Europe as an
example. Israelis just wasting their time with any offers, what a pity L

Dear Mr. David,

As all Jews comments and Arab Haters, your comment is very obvious and expected, you discussed the Arab fantasy world, can you also please elaborate on Jews fantasy world? this Fantasy world which gave them a land they don't own from a people they are not responsible on Jews suffering and massacres in Europe?

Based on what right you can go after 3000 years (if we accepted the Israeli fantasy story of having a right in this land), and clam for a land, why at the same time you can accept or understand people kick out from their land in 1948 in UN refugees camp to go back to their home land which was taken only 60 years ago and not 3000 years ago, again, if we agreed on this fantasy story propagated by Israeli governments.

Of course, you will have no answer, because it is the law of power, Israel can by force prevent Palestinians from their land, so they will, no any other crab will make any difference, it is a jungle out there and Netanyahy is just a new Monkey in the Jungle playing his role before another Monkey shows up.

Marwan, while David's comments are a bit extreme, you must also realize that the Palestinians are the ones that need to make concessions, and not the Israelis. As in all wars, to the victor go the spoils. The land of Israel has been in a constant state of war since its inception, and time after time Israel comes out victorious.

I will grant you that Israeli tactics are often harsh. Palestinians need to learn humility, at least to the extremists. Their method of inciting terror isn't helping the situation, it is only galvanizing the Israeli people around their leaders. If Palestinians truly wanted peace, they could achieve it by simply laying down their arms. While this may seem extreme, it is the ideal solution. If Palestine was unarmed, they would have a much easier time encouraging a UN task force to help control the peace in Palestine.

What makes Netanyahu think it is his right to determine Palestinian Governance of their own state? He needs to stop Israeli's from encroaching on Palestinian territory, rather than be calling for what kind of government Palestinians are 'allowed' to have.

Muslims are problem, not Jews. When Muslims learn that Israel is land of Jews peace will come. Until Muslims stop attacking innocent around the world, their reputation is stained. Shark is correct, if Palestinians want peace, let them lead with example.

Dear Marwan, yes Arabs lost their land in 40th, but so did: Germans, Poles, Japan, Hungarians and many more! But... contrary to these nations Arabs refused partition many - many times. Remember "3 No"? in 60th? All human history laced with wars and displacement. Losers loose and that if a fact. But, Israelies still offer "losers" a deal, I almost sure it wont happen if the shoe was on another foot!

Let's examine Palestinian record--
Betrayed themselves by inviting foreign occupiers into Palestine in 1947.
Betrayed Jordanians but trying to take over Jordan.
Betrayed Lebanese by taking over part of the country and evicting thousands of Lebanese.
Betrayed Kuwaitis and Saudis who gave them billions by supporting S. Hussein.

And this is just for starters. The fact is Palestinian leaders are incapable even making a deal among themselves, let alone another state.

I don't this this conflict will ever end. It is someone's land that was promised for someone else. Both sides have been wronged at some time but does not justify anything. No matter what they suggest, I personally have no hope about ending this conflict in near future. Both sides need to have apt leadership to get to a near-satisfactory outcome and then convince their people about it - then only it will end.
