WORLD: 5 suspects arrested in gang rape and beating of a 15-year-old girl outside her high school homecoming dance
Five suspects, two adults and three juveniles, have been arrested in connection with gang rape and beating of a 15-year old girl outside Richmond High School homecoming dance in Northern California.
Arrests include -
- 21-year-old Richmond man identified as Salvadore Rodriguez
- 19-year-old Richmond High School dropout Manuel Ortega
- Juvenile suspects are boys ages 15, 16 and 17
More arrests are expected.
Authorities followed up their promise of more arrests in the case by taking three suspects into custody over a six-hour span beginning Tuesday evening.
Officers arrested a 21-year-old Richmond man, identified as Salvadore Rodriguez , around 7:40 p.m. and followed that by taking a San Pablo teenager into custody about two hours later. The fifth suspect in the case – a teenager from Pinole -- surrendered to authorities late Tuesday night. Richmond police officers had gone to his home with an arrest warrant earlier in the day, but he was not home, authorities said.

Police believe that there may be as many as 10 assailants, ranging in age from 15 to their early 20s. The report says that that after the homecoming dance at 9:30pm (Saturday), the girl was heading to meet her father for a ride home when a classmate invited her to join a group drinking in the courtyard. Shortly afterward, the girl was allegedly robbed, beaten and gang-raped for more than two hours before police intervened. The attackers were taking pictures and laughing while taking turns raping the girl.
They say evidence investigators have obtained leads them to believe the attackers laughed and took photos as they took turns assaulting the girl.Source: www.ktvu.com
It seems like several people witnessed the attack, but did not try to stop it.
“Unfortunately, there is no penalty for being an observer of a crime and not getting involved,” he said. “Even though it is very offensive on one level, the penal code does not make it illegal.”Source: www.ktvu.com
The girl is suffering with non-threatening injuries but is obviously under a lot trauma.
This is just horrific! I wonder if the observers can be charged with as accessory to the crime.

Friend of gang rape victim blasts school officials over safety
Kami Baker, 16, a junior at Richmond High School and friend of the 15-year old gang-rape victim had the following to say at a public safety hearing Wednesday.
"We were going to go look for her," said Kami Baker, 16, a junior at the school.
The next day, Baker learned the ugly truth about what had happened to her friend.
"I busted up crying," Baker said.
"I looked outside of the gym and I saw 12 to 15 guys, sitting there, with no IDs," Baker said at the hearing. "The officers -- not only did they not check the IDs of those students or men sitting outside of of our campus, but the security officers who are employed here did no ... checking either. The assistant principal looked outside and actually saw those men, and did nothing about it."
Baker took the podium with her younger sister, Barbie, a freshman at the school, who had spent a chunk of Saturday evening with the rape victim.
"This story has disrupted the school's morale greatly, including my own. I am friends with the girl," Baker said. "When I started here, I felt extremely unsafe and so did she, due to the lack of police officers and security officers."
Baker later described the 15-year-old girl as a churchgoer who struggled to fit in at Richmond High.

4 Arraigned in the Gang rape and beating of 15-year old
Following are the 4 suspects that were arraigned -
- Cody Ray Smith, over 14 years old
- Ari Abdallah Morales, under 16
- Marcelles James Peter
- Manuel Ortega, 19
Smith appeared at the Contra Costa County Superior Court and pleaded not guilty to charges of rape with a foreign object and rape by force.
Morales and Peter also appeared with Smith but did not enter the plea.
Smith, Morales and Peter wore bullet proof protective vests.
The fourth suspect, Manuel Ortega, 19, appeared separately without an attorney and did not enter a plea. He did not wear a protective vest.

Sixth person, 18-year old Jose Carlos Mantano, was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with the gang rape and beating of a 15-year-old girl outside her high school homecoming dance.

Wow, thats really crazy. The fact that these kids actually raped the girl in public is a sign of their complete disregard for anything. Those watching also must be punished,

The fact that people actually watched and didnt assist in stopping it is a hit to our society. The fact is when i was growing up i wouldnt have hesitated and on more than one occassion i assisted someone in need of help regardless of the danger to myself. The fact these lame excuse for americans stood around to watch someone get raped makes them lower than human and they should be all put behind bars. Would they have acted out differently if it was a family member or perhaps their gf or sister. It shouldnt have to come down to that type of relationship for us to help another human being. Otherwise why do we have the military to protect and defend our country when our own people cant defend the innocent ones when they see a crime and watch it.

This is absolutely dreadful. As militarymale said, this is a severe hit to our society. What the local media should do is identify all people that witnessed this and make an example of them by listing each of their names and phone numbers for public ridicule. How can someone be so low as to watch a rape in progress and do nothing?

Each and every participant deserves a bullet in the back of the head. No need to give them jail terms and waste taxpayer money. These perpetrators are incapable of becoming contributing members of society. Kill them and make the world a safer place.
