Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, has accused of killing 13 people and injuring 30+ at the US Army base at Ford Hood, Texas. Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the base commander at Fort Hood, said on NBC's Today Show that witnesses heard Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan shout "Allahu Akbar!" before opening fire. The phrase means "God is great!" in Arabic.

Contrary to earlier reports of him being one of the dead, he is alive and in stable condition.

Hours before Hasan went on the shooting spree, he was caught on CCTV at a 7-Eleven store.

Early Thursday, Hasan showed no signs of worry or stress when he stopped at 7-Eleven for his daily breakfast of hash browns, said Jeannie Strickland, the store's manager.

“He came in (Thursday) morning just like normal,” she said.

However, surveillance video showed he was wearing religious attire rather than typical civilian or medical clothing. Strickland said that was unusual and she asked him about it, but he replied that he did that sometimes.

Hasan's family is reported to be in shock - Nader Hasan, his cousin, told Fox News.

"We are trying to make sense of all this," he said. "He wasn't even someone who enjoyed going to the firing range."

Maj. Hasan was working with soldiers at Darnall Army Medical Center on Fort Hood after being transferred in July from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he had worked for six years before getting a bad review.

Hasan, who was born and raised in Virginia and graduated from Virginia Tech University, turned against the wars after hearing the stories of those who came back from Afghanistan and Iraq, Nader Hasan said.

Maj. Hasan, raised a Muslim, had wanted to go into the military against his parent's wishes, but he was taunted by others after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, his cousin said.

Hasan was already having problems even with his Military colleagues.

"We just found out on the news that he was being deployed, he never even told us. We've known for probably the last five years that that was his worst nightmare.

"[As an army psychiatrist] He deals with stories, he'd tell us how he would hear things, horrific things.

"But even before hearing things from the war, what was affecting him psychologically [was that] he was dealing with some harassment with some of his military colleagues to the extent that he hired a military attorney to try to have the issue resolved, pay back the Government to get out of the military.

"He was at the end of everything to try to make everybody fair and reasonable so he cold get out of the situation so I'm really shocked and baffled and if anyone wants to try to suggest that it has something to do with being afraid of going to war, then that's it.

"I don't think he was ever disenchanted with being in the military, he loved [it] and was the one who insisted on going into the military even against his parents wishes.

"It was the harassment that got to him, him being referenced from his Middle Eastern ethnicity even though was born and raised here, went to high school here in North Virginia..went to Virginia Tech and never been in any trouble, just normal and played sports."

It seems like Hasan was not very supportive about the war and he seems to have had a change of heart after listening to horrific things from soldiers. His deployment seems to have triggered him into this shooting spree.

This is really sad that an army personal would take the life of fellow officers! Maybe army needs to reconsider its own psychiatric evaluations of doctors in the field?
