Video: Denmark Dolphin Slaughter; Tell Denmark/EU to stop!

I came across an email from a friend with regards to Faroese in Demark who slaughter whales and dolphins after driving them ashore in a carnival-like celebration. Check the video below and if you do believe in saving dolphins and whales, please sign the petition.

Use your discretion while watching the video, it is very disturbing  -

From here -

Whales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound capacity to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans.

Denmark Dolphin Slaughter

Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The exhausted, terrified and confused whales are eventually driven into the shallows. Here the bloodbath begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed. The blood-stained bay is soon filled with horribly mutilated and dying whales.

Denmark Dolphin Slaughter

The Faroese celebrate the butchery of their victims in an carnival atmosphere of entertainment. Indoctrinated from an early age, children are often given a day off school to watch the fun. They run down to the bay and clamber over the carcasses of slaughtered whales.

Denmark Dolphin Slaughter

Every year around 2,000 whales are driven ashore and cruelly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands, mid-way between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. For centuries the Faroe Islanders have hunted pilot whales, driving entire schools into killing bays, where they are speared or gaffed from boats, dragged ashore and butchered with knives. Although the Islands are a protectorate of Denmark, they have their own Government and regulations governing the pilot whale hunt or "grind" as it is known.

Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.

The drive hunt is a practice abandoned elsewhere many decades ago, and now outlawed by other European states. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands have no subsistence need for whale meat, and much of the flesh is left to rot and be dumped; it cannot be exported, as it is polluted with heavy metals and other toxins and therefore cannot meet EU heath standards for human food.

According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).

Why not give Dolphins Non-Human Person Status?

Considering Dolphins are, considered by some, to be the closest animal to man by means of intelligence, this atrocity is ever more evident. This type of action, both in Denmark and in Japan, has led a select few to try to gain a non-human persons status for them.

While this may seem too much for some, after considering the logic being put forward this idea isn't too much of a stretch.  The following is an article, copied in full, about this posted Physorg.com.  I am sure that article itself may change a few minds.

Bottle Nosed Dolphin

Scientists studying dolphin behavior have suggested they could be the most intelligent creatures on Earth after humans, saying the size of their brains in relation to body size is larger than that of our closest relatives, the chimpanzees, and their behaviors suggest complex intelligence. One scientist said they should therefore be treated as "non-human persons" and granted rights as individuals.

The behavioral studies showed (especially the bottlenose) have distinct personalities and self-awareness, and they can think about the future. The research also confirmed dolphins have complex social structures, with individuals co-operating to solve difficult problems or to round up shoals of fish to eat, and with new behaviors being passed from one dolphin to another.

Several examples of learning being passed on to other individuals have been observed. In one case a rescued dolphin in South Australia, taught to tail-walk during recuperation, in turn taught the trick to other wild dolphins in the Port Adelaide river estuary when she was released. According to Mike Bossley it was "like watching a dance craze take off", with the dolphins apparently learning the trick just for fun, since tail-walking has no natural function.

Work carried out by professor of psychology at the City University of New York, Diana Reiss, showed dolphins could recognize themselves in a mirror, and could use it to inspect other parts of their bodies, an ability previously only demonstrated in humans and a few animals such as apes, elephants and pigs. In another study Reiss was able to teach captive dolphins a rudimentary language based on symbols.

In anatomical studies of the dolphin, zoologist Lori Marino and colleagues from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia in the US, used MRI () scans to map the brains of dolphins and compare them with the brains of primates. She found the ratio of dolphin brain mass to body size to be second only to the human brain, which means dolphin brains are relatively larger than those of chimpanzees.

The neocortex and cerebral cortex of the bottlenose dolphins were particularly large and the cortex had similar convoluted folds to those found in human brains and strongly associated with intelligence. Cortical folds increase the volume of the cortex and its capacity for interconnections to form. Marino said the findings on anatomy and intelligence of dolphins mean we should re-examine the treatment of dolphins, especially when their treatment results in suffering.

Reiss and Marino say their behavioral and anatomical findings and our new understanding of dolphin intelligence mean it may not be ethical to keep dolphins in aquatic amusement parks for our entertainment, or to kill them for food. Around 300,000 whales, dolphins, and porpoises die each year, with some being killed for food, such as the annual killing of thousands of dolphins and small whales in Taijii, Japan, or even to prove the manhood of those killing them, such as the slaughter of Calderon dolphins at Faroe Island, in Denmark.

Reiss and Marino will present their findings at a conference in San Diego, California next month. Also speaking at the conference will be professor of ethics and business at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Thomas White, who said the new research adds weight to his ideas that dolphins should be regarded as "non-human persons" with the right to be treated as individuals. White is the author of the book "In Defense of Dolphins".

What European Union has to say about it? They care more about the standardization of  cucumbers within its territory!

If this is allowed just based on their barabarism long history, what is the value of life?

OMG there are no words to describe the horrific scenes and to be honest words are beyond me and it left me feeling sick and i felt so sorry for the poor animals that did nothing to harm nobody. and people have the god damn cheek to say they are animal lovers when we see this happen, they are gods creatures for f**k sake and they need to be left alone to live out thier own life and not end up on some f*****s plate

Much fail in such a short text, that's not Denmark, that's the Faroe islands, a nation with a tradition for whalehunting that is a thousand years old.

There are no dolphins there, these are all long-finned pilot whales.

Less than a thousand whales are killed there each year while the global population of pilot whales is conservatively estimated at about one million animals.

This is not a hunt and definitely not for commercial gains, these people don't actively go out to search for animals but rather if a group of animals comes close to land people might kill some of them for food.

They are all killed as humanely as possibly, with a stab of a very sharp knife that severs the spine and the main arteries, done by trained people who have years of experience, no Freddy vs Jason reenactment.

But feel free to spout comments about those that don't share your view of the world, while you munch away on burgers and steaks.

Please tell me people get badly injured or killed carrying out their so called shopping spree, many years ago I wanted to visit this Island for an holiday, but having seen a documentry on tv about their barbaric ways I did'nt bother and never will pass any of my money to this bunch of scum, maybe if everyone in their own way could find a way to hit their pockets it would be a start. In answer to smartlady why country leaders wont do anything is until we start using whale and dolfin oil to run our vehicles etc the government's don't give a shit about anyone or anything. "Maybe one day if they discover oil fields in the area they will move troops in to protect whales and dolfins from terrorists" lol

I am so deeply disturbed by this.  I cannot believe that a human could be so cruel.  I only hope that if there is a time in these peoples lives where they are in a situation that compassion could be shown to them......it is and they realize what they have done!!!!! What are we doing to our world???

европейская цивилизация всегда, абсолютно всегда была вероломна. Они и здесь использовали доверие дельфинов, приплывших рядом с лодками датчан. А люди предательски всех убили....

Никогда не доверяйте европейцам, христианской цивилизации!

I have no words for such a terrible act of horrific actions. May the Creator's vengence (Divine Justice and Lady Karma) be timely and more severe to these low life humans. I truly believe He will repay and avenge these terrible acts and not show any mercy.

We are calling for a Condemnation this cruel slaughter of dolphins in the Faroe Islands.

Though it is important to recognize that every culture has beliefs and customs different from our own, there are some issues that deserve no tolerance.

If the cruelty of Bird and Animals hunting has a reason, although very weak reason in developing  countries – in a geometrical progression growing  population in such countries, but  the  Denmark ...

We are calling for the Denmark Government to put an end to the Faroe Islands‘ cruell off slaughter of dolphins.  Such a shame...

All I can say is "HOLY SHIT, CIVILIZED PEOPLE STILL DO THAT?" (aside from the krazy Japanese, of course) ... and that I signed the petition.
